Project summary so far

Baltic Biogas Bus project

The Baltic Biogas Bus project will prepare for and increase the use of the eco-fuel Biogas in public transport in order to reduce environmental impact from the traffic and make the Baltic Sea Region a better place to live, work and invest in.

Overall progress

Since the start up meeting in Tartu, 1st of December 2009, much has happened. The BBB project is in its start up phase and most of the major activities are still either in a planning stage or has just begun. However, many activities have been initiated, several of them ahead of the time plan, and throughout the project we expect to gradually be able to report of an increasing number of actions. Notable achievements so far are:

  • Stockholm Public Transport has produced a draft report on a strategy on how to introduce biogas driven buses in Public Transport
  • Tartu City has started a feasibility study for a new long term and sustainable transport plan.
  • A study to investigate the possibilities of using landfill gas from the Tveta waste handling facility plant south of Stockholm to upgrade and use as fuel in buses.
  • A study concerning supply and demand of biogas in the eastern region of Sweden.

Performed seminars and dissemination activities

This web site has been set up where you can read about the projects progress and the aims of the project.

A Baltic Biogas Bus information package consisting of roll-ups, flyers, posters, etc has been developed. The material is in English, but has also been translated into other languages.

A regional Baltic Biogas Bus seminar was held in conjunction with the biannual Nordic Biogas Conference, 10th to12th of March in Oslo. Ruter AS hosted the seminar which was held as a parallel session to the conference. In addition to the seminar an exhibition about the benefits with biogas as fuel in buses was held. More information about the seminar as well as downloadable versions of the presentations held can be found on the website.

A partner meeting was held 21st of September in Kaunas, in conjunction with a regional seminar on the 22nd of September. The program included several interesting topics, such as biogas bus emissions and Life cycle cost issues and Dr. Juozas Savickas, head scientific officer at Laboratory of Renewable Energy of Lithuanian Energy Institute, held a presentation about production of biogas from organic waste and its usage in Lithuania from economic and environmental perspectives.

Upcoming events

During the fall and winter several other regional seminars are planned. The projects website will be continuously updated with information about programs, dates and registration procedures
